Thank you Judith Bakirya (BFFF director and world-renowned perma-culturist) for donating Hibiscus seeds to BFFF land. Judith sent a bag of Hibiscus seeds – on a cross-country bus from Kampala to Kabale – along with example images and guidelines for how best to prepare and plant Hibiscus along with sister-seeds, Marigold and Lemongrass:

Prepare the Garden & Seeds:

  • Space between the plants is like Maize planting. 1m or 30ft between plants. Make a hole of 1ft. Add two mugs of Bio-Manure- Kavundiira. Cover some soil.
  • Soak Seeds for planting in water a day before you plant.

Planting:

  • Put 4 to 5 Seeds of Hibiscus per hole to increase chances of germinating.
  • To repel pests, plant a line of Marigolds between the lines of Hibiscus. Marigold flowers have very many varieties. Look for those that are locally grow in Lake Bunyonyi.
  • Hedges: All round the whole garden plant Lemon Grass mixed with Marigolds.  They all repel pests and will make our garden beautiful.

Thank you Hillary Makire and Tyson Bunyonyi (BFFF directors) for taking the lead in gathering the supplies needed and organizing the BFFF community (women, youth, and men leaders) for a planting day.

Thank you to BFFF community members (women, youth, men leaders) for taking time to prepare and plant our Hisbiscus trial garden, along with its eco-friendly sister plants (marigold and lemongrass). When harvested and dried, health-enriching tea can be brought to this community and beyond.
