BFFF Background

Renewing Relations with Land, Water and People

Since 2019, relationships, research, fieldwork, and design plans have been created with the knowledge and leadership of Kashekye and Kyevu/Batwa communities – and the collaborative support of local government(s), surrounding organizations, global friends & relations, and a skilled team of BFFF members (including local residents, government officials, Ugandan and Canadian university professors, and a renowned Uganda permaculturist – Judith Bakirya).

2019: Land Secured; Community Priorities Defined

Location of Bunyonyi Food Forest (BFF):

The site for Bunyonyi Food Forest is located on 3 acres of lakefront land on Lake Bunyonyi. The rural community that is directly involved in the work of BFFF reside within the surrounding Kashekye Village, Rubanda District, Hamuhambo Town Council.

2019: Community-driven Priorities

  • Food Security and Nutrition
  • Women’s Leadership
  • Youth Education
Heavy rains, landslides, soil depletion, loss of dense forests, and current bare lands are increasingly common, leading to malnutrition, increased diseases, unsustainable agriculture, and damaged and depleting natural resources (Bakirya & Kagoma, BFFF Fieldwork Report).

I am very happy with what I am seeing.
The land for the Bunyonyi Food Forest
is perfect for sustainable permaculture.
It will become the center for transforming the area.
Let it spread out like a wildfire so that everyone
can preserve the environment,
have the food, have the income,
and preserve the land into the future…

2019-2024: Community Fieldwork; Relationship-building; Creation of Foundation & Programs

Ugandan permaculturist, Judith Bakirya and research assistant Emma Kagoma (Trainer and Designer of Forest Gardens with Internship on Organic Farm in Germany), visited land to assess sustainable agriculture and to lead community-based fieldwork.

Bunyonyi Food Forest Foundation (BFFF) was created from the fieldwork report, constitution, food forest map design, BFFF team, support from neighbouring organizations (i.e., Hamuhambo Town Council, Entusi & Seeds of Hope), and growing interest/commitment from Community members.

Land-based Programs, Women’s group, Youth Group, and Community volunteers identified for BFFF.  Construction of infrastructure began with sustainable agriculture and community protocol as top priorities.
